EC Specialist Contractors delivered a project at The Royal Edinburgh Hospital to create a New Switchroom, providing upgraded LV electrical services to facilitate future refurbishment and alterations to the Kitchen and Dining facilities within the MacKinnon House building, Morningside Place Edinburgh.

The works included:

  • the isolation, removal and relocation of existing M&E services (electrical, plumbing, drainage and extract ventilation) to the kitchen.
  • Strip out of existing kitchen fitments fixtures, including the breaking out of concrete plinths.
  • Formation of a new door opening through a 750mm thick stone/masonry wall involving a designed temporary works propping system.
  • New partitioning and gyp Ceiling shaft system ceiling to create a fire compartment forming the new electrical switchroom including integral steel support frame structure
  • Alterations to existing suspended ceiling system to form a new bulkhead forming containment to the new electric supply cables throughout the existing canteen.
  • Installation of 2 new sub mains cables and containment above ceilings run 75m throughout the existinh hospital rooms and corridors.
  • A full power shutdown of existing services affecting many essential services within the hospital.
  • New power, lighting, emergency lighting, smoke detection, fire alarm installations and extract ventilation.
  • Installation of a galvanised steel Cat Ladder to provide roof access.
  • New fire doors, hygienic wall cladding, ceramic floor tiling and decoration.

In addition to the project being carried out in a live 24/7 hospital, the kitchen facility and canteen remained in full operation throughout the entirety of the works, seven days a week requiring the majority of the project works being undertaken out of hours.

Despite a number of design and logistical challenges, all of which were collaboratively overcome, the project was successfully delivered to the highest quality, within budget and handed over defect free for a very satisfied client.
